Pest

Citrus leaf miner

What it is

A tiny moth larva that tunnels inside new citrus leaves, leaving silvery squiggly trails and curling the foliage. Mostly cosmetic on established trees.

How to identify it

Silvery serpentine trails within new leaves, which curl and distort. Worst on soft summer flush growth.

How to treat it

Prune off badly affected flush and spray new growth with horticultural (paraffin) oil to deter egg-laying.

How to prevent it

Avoid heavy summer nitrogen feeds that push soft growth, and time feeding so flushes harden off before peak moth activity.
