Pest

Two-spotted (spider) mite

What it is

Sap-sucking mites that flare in hot, dry conditions, giving leaves a stippled, dusty look with fine webbing underneath.

How to identify it

Pale stippling and a dull, dusty leaf surface, with fine webbing under leaves; tiny moving specks up close.

How to treat it

Hose leaves (especially undersides) to raise humidity, and spray horticultural oil. Predatory mites help in the open garden.

How to prevent it

Keep plants well-watered in heat, avoid dusty stressed conditions, and avoid broad insecticides that kill their predators.
