What it is
Tiny white sap-suckers that fly up in a cloud when a plant is disturbed, weakening it and coating leaves in sticky honeydew.
How to identify it
Clouds of tiny white insects on leaf undersides, sticky residue and sooty mould, yellowing leaves.
How to treat it
Hose undersides, use yellow sticky traps, and spray horticultural soap or oil. Encourage predatory insects.
How to prevent it
Inspect new seedlings before planting, avoid overcrowding, and keep plants unstressed and well-watered.
