Cabbage white caterpillar
What it is
The velvety green caterpillars of the white cabbage moth chew irregular holes in brassica leaves and hide along the leaf midribs.
How to identify it
Green caterpillars (often along veins), ragged holes, and dark green droppings on leaves. White butterflies fluttering over the bed.
How to treat it
Pick off caterpillars by hand, or spray with Bt (Dipel), a caterpillar-specific biological control that spares other insects.
How to prevent it
Cover crops with fine netting, plant decoy nasturtiums nearby, and inspect leaf undersides for eggs.
