Family-size harvest calculator
Tell us how many people you feed and we'll estimate how many plants of each crop to grow, and how much bed space you need for a year's worth.
Yield figures are indicative home-garden estimates pending verification against ABS consumption data.
Common questions
How many tomato plants do I need for a family of 4?
As a rough guide, around 7 tomato plants covers a household of 4 for the season — about 2.8 m² of bed space. Adjust for how much you eat fresh versus preserve.
How is the number of plants calculated?
We multiply a per-person annual need (kilograms) by your household size, divide by the typical yield of one home-garden plant, then round up. Bed area comes from the usual planting density for that crop.
Are these figures exact?
They are indicative home-garden estimates. Real yields vary with climate, variety and care, so treat the result as a starting point rather than a precise target.
